Woodwind Quintet 2, movement 3 “Great River”
3. Great River – features broad, bold melodies by the horn accompanied by rapid, repeating, interlocking chord arpeggiations in flute, oboe and clarinet. The chords outlined contain 4-8 pitches, so the challenge of creating the chord’s color with just three instruments was met with their overlapping (as seen in the figure below) in a delayed stretto, a not uncommon minimalist technique. The bassoon plays less frequently than the higher woodwind, but fulfills 3 roles: 1)
doubling the horn when needed for dynamics, 2) joining in the arpeggios and 3) providing bass for harmony.
